Winter Escape to Paradise

January 17 – 24, 2015
Cat Island, Bahamas
Fernandez Bay Village Resort

Wandering Spirit Yoga Travel has teamed up again with Open Door Yoga’s Monica Shannon to offer a winter yoga retreat at the beautiful Fernandez Bay Village on Cat Island, Bahamas. Cat Island is part of the family island of the Bahamas and far from the traditional tourists trail. Enjoy secluded, unspoiled white sand beaches, crystal clear blue waters and a slower pace of life. This is the ideal place to disconnect from the never ending technological buzz of day to day life and focus on taking care of you while enjoying the benefits of doing yoga every day.

  • Yoga

Classes will be taught by Monica and Tiffany. Each day we will have at least one 90 minute yoga class, a guided yoga nidra session or restorative yoga session and optional meditation session in order to max out the relaxation factor. This is your getaway from reality, and with our small group size there is always flexibility to adapt the schedule to the needs of the group!

Yoga classes are held down the beach from the resort in a covered cabana just 50 feet from the bay waters. You will be surrounded by island vegetation and the sound of calm breezes over the bay. Not only do you get to enjoy a short beautiful walk down the beach on your way to yoga, you can refresh yourself in the perfect salt water on your way back.

Private classes with Tiffany or Monica are available at an additional cost. Time slots will be limited, so please inform us if you are interested in scheduling a private session.

  • Additional Activities and Excursions

A little fun fact: Tiffany grew up on Cat Island and loves to share her knowledge into the culture and history of the island and its people. As a result, she can help you immerse yourself into real island life especially with the 3 excursions she has planned for you. Four wheel it to the other side of the island and take a dip into the Atlantic Ocean or perhaps partake in a little body surfing or snorkeling.  Advanced Ghosh Lineage Yoga Retreat

January 24-31, 2015
Cat Island, Bahamas

The Ghosh Lineage is more than the 26 postures made so well known by Bikram yoga. This retreat is your chance to learn more about the entire 84 postures of the Ghosh lineage. Don’t worry this is not a teacher training…rather, it is an immersion deeper into a lineage you already know and love without the distraction of your daily life. Practice the yoga, play with the yoga and learn more about the yoga as you get more hands on adjustments and tailored directions. Do this all to the back drop of crystal blue, pool calm waters and powder soft sand a stones throw away from the yoga cabana! A yogi’s dream come true!

  • Yoga

Bishnu Ghosh’s sequence of 84 postures was created nearly 100yrs ago, and yet most only know 26 of these postures and 2 breathing excercise made famous by one of his students,Bikram Choudry.  Most in the Western world now call the sequence of 26 postures as Bikram yoga, and it has changed many lives.  It is indeed a great foundation system, but as we grow and evolve so too should our practice.  That is where this retreat comes in!

Dive head first into the FULL Ghosh 84 Series…

Get ready to dive head first into the FULL Ghosh 84 Series from which Bikram designed his 26 posture sequence.  You will practice four hours each morning with Tiffany and Monica on the full 84 Series.  Don’t worry if you have never done any other poses than the Bikram 26…that is the purpose of this retreat, to expose you to the entire Ghosh Lineage.  Monica and Tiffany are there to help you learn.  They will break down poses as needed or explain what preparatory pose will help you on your journey to find a more advanced pose.

Yoga is a journey.  This retreat will give you more tools and knowledge to guide you on your journey into your practice!

Evening yoga sessions are all optional.  Choices for the evening practice will be either a full Restorative or a Gentle version of the Ghosh Primary 26 followed by a Meditation session to the setting sun!

    Monica Shannon
Monica Shannon is the founder and director of Open Door Yoga and the Bija Hot Yoga Teacher Training program. Monica draws upon a lifetime of exploring the potential of mind/body relationship through sports and professional dancing, extensive backpacking, pregnancies and motherhood…not to mention her ten years and thousands of hours of teaching, studying and practicing Hot Yoga in the lineage of Bishnu Ghosh (Bikram Choudhury’s teacher and Guru).

Her journey as a yogi and teacher began with Bikram Yoga in 2001. Her inspiration for Open Door Yoga was a desire to simplify the path toward optimal benefit from Hatha Yoga. She has found the modern versions of Hatha Yoga to be complicated and often times intimidating and inaccessible to most people. Striving to make yoga accessible to old, young, injured and the chronically unhealthy, Monica started studying with Tony Sanchez and has begun to develop sequences (or rather a method of creating sequences) that honor all limitations and potentials.

    Tiffany Ingersoll
Tiffany’s journey into the world of yoga began in 1999 with a Rodney Yee yoga DVD in her dorm room.  From there it took Tiffany several years of sampling many flavors, styles and lineages of yoga to find a practice that resonated with her mind and body.  She found this in the Ghosh lineage, from which Bikram pulled his 26 posture series.  After three years of serious consistent practice in the this lineage she took the plunge into the Biji Yoga teacher training in 2008 that focused on the Ghosh lineage and has been teaching actively at Open Door Yoga in Raleigh, NC ever since.   The study and of yoga is an endless adventure for Tiffany.

So how did come to start a yoga travel business?  Tiffany moved to Raleigh in 2005 to work for a student educational adventure study abroad company for whom she had worked previously as summer staff and before that as a student.  When she came to the organization she took on new program development as well as directing Caribbean operations.  Over the following 8 years she learned much about how to design interesting, active and educational international programs, working with foreign outfitters, international logistics and travel, and group dynamics.  It is from this base and with 5 years teaching yoga under her belt that Tiffany chose to combine her two passions of travel and yoga.  Hence came to life Wandering Spirit Yoga Travel!
